Masters of the Universe is returning to the big screen with Nicholas Galitzine as He-Man in the reboot of the beloved saga, and although the film tells an original story, the director has openly stated that he wants to pay homage to the original stories, including the beloved 1980s animated TV series.
Specifically, in addition to teasing the role of She-Ra, director Travis Knight revealed to SFX magazine in its latest issue that he’s found an original way to pay homage to the He-Man and the Masters of the Universe series in his new film: “If you watched the Filmation cartoons from the ’80s, you know that Skeletor had grand plans for power in every episode,” explains Knight. “He’d put some plan into action, get defeated, and then promise to return the following week. And so on. We asked ourselves, ‘What if he actually won?’ That’s how our movie begins. Skeletor’s plan finally works.”
In addition to paying homage to the original animated series, Knight also told SFX that he wanted to include as many Masters of the Universe characters as possible. “At one point, I felt like an irresponsible fanboy rather than a director, so I had to take a step back,” he confessed. “This universe is so rich and dense. It has over 40 years of history and mythology, so we’ve only scratched the surface. I feel very lucky to have been able to include some of my favorite characters, including Ram Man, Fisto, and Mekaneck.”
The new Masters of the Universe movie sees Prince Adam Glenn, played by Nicholas Galitzine, return to Eternia 15 years after he left. Upon his arrival, he discovers that his homeland has been destroyed and is now ruled by the cruel Skeletor. To save the world and reclaim his legacy, he teams up with Teela (Camila Mendes) and Man-At-Arms (Idris Elba) to battle the powerful warlord.
